   i would have thought this was self evident. Yes. It doesn't have to be a third world country to be philanthropy.

   The definition of philanthropy is any act done for the betterment of others without any expectation of reward or compensation. Volunteer work is a great way to be philanthropic, since you're not doing it to get paid. And even if you're doing it because community service looks good on a resume`, better you do it for that reason than not doing it at all.

   It is actually a form of misanthropy, the literal and exact opposite of philanthropy. Since humans are not only self-destructive but also destroy others, furthering or supporting the species is in fact supporting even more pain and suffering.
