Iowa casinos contribute to multi-million dollar county endowment funds created to help small town residents reinvest in their communities
As the worst recession since World War II drags on, officials across the country are considering just about anything in hopes of shoring up sagging budgets. Nowhere is the problem more acute than in California where state coffers are $26.3 billion in the red. But the Golden State isnt alone. In Iowa, the states Racing and Gaming Commission considered proposals this week from five largely rural counties that say casinos could give their struggling economies a much needed boost. Whether rural casinos will work may depend on several factors, and could influence whether the commission approves licenses for five more casinos in a state that already is home to 17. “In the most recent Economist, HBS professor and world renowned strategist Michael Porter said there will be huge opportunities in the next 20 years to fix the billions of dollars lost each year in inefficient philanthropy. Philanthropist.org is uniquely positioned to meet the most fundamental requirement to resolve this issue, specifically, creating the infrastructure for an open market, micro-philanthropic method of valuing widely differentiated social needs. We have the website already posted and the proprietary rating and security technology to empower a new generation of micro-philanthropists while saving traditional non-profit organizations major percentages of their fundraising overhead, all while providing our investors a socially beneficial and profitable return.”

geronimo- They can sponsor fund raisers that only require a donation of their time.
LL- So, do you feel that the extent of their donations is in proportion to their wealth?
Random acts of kindness increase the immune system’s ingredient, serotonin, in not only those who are first party (donor/donee) but also in anyone who witnesses the act of benevolence. Thus, philanthropy contributes to a healthier world.
The Royal Family do much to contribute to charitable causes.
Why only the other day a boy scout knocked on the gates of Buckingham Palace to enquire as to whether the Queen might want to make use of his services during Bob-a-Job week.
He was invited into the Palace and cleaned all of the windows, mowed the lawns, took the corgis for a walk and polished the boots of the Household Cavalry. At the end of the day the boy was presented with a shiny five pence piece for which he was most grateful.
Never let it be said that the Queen doesn’t do her bit for charity!

Defining Global Citizenship: From Philanthropy to Activism
Contributing to the common good takes many forms, from individual acts of philanthropy to ongoing patterns of social activism.
1) How can individual philanthropists make the best use of their resources? What successful frameworks exist inside and outside the region?
2) Do companies have a responsibility to the wider community, or should they simply contribute funds to “specialist” institutions?
3) What can ordinary members of society do to become active global citizens? How can such activism be encouraged?
